The idea of school is a united student, teacher and parent body to reach the main goal-to develop students` personal ability for their future life to be an open minded and critical citizen in the whole world by improving their researching skills, by implementing principles of sustainability in educational programs and learning and teaching process.
The students have possibility to acquire 4 foreign languages (English, German, Russian and French). In addition, pupils acquire some subjects in foreign language (Math and Natural Science in English).
We offer many out of class activities: choir, folklore dance group, debate club, sport sections (basketball, volleyball, football, swimming).
The participation in different European projects is one of our school brands. Gymnasium serves as a basis for City education board in arranging methodical activities, providing materials and human resources.
Debates are integral part of school curriculum since 1998. We offer debates for 13 - 16 years old students in native language (Latvian), for 16 -18 years old - in Latvian and English. Twice a year there are regional and national tournaments organised in Latvia. ~ 10 schools take part in the regional tournaments and ~ 24 – in the national tournaments. The motions are about important social and political topics (Brexit and EU, Votes and Media, Corruption etc.).
The school offers debate camps for young debaters and professional development courses for teachers.
In Daugavpils State Gymnasium (Latvia), the debate program has been implemented since 1995, when the creation of debate clubs and the organization of regional and national tournaments using Karl Popper's debate format was started in Latvia. The regional Debate Center operates in the Daugavpils State Gymnasium, which organizes debate tournaments for elementary and high school teams in Latvian and English twice a semester. The best debating teams meet in the national tournament.
Since the starting of the educational reform in Latvia in 2020, debate as a form of learning has been included in social sciences, but each school chooses its own way of learning debate skills. In Daugavpils State Gymnasium, all 10th grade students learn debate in social science classes outside of the debate club (learn to make arguments, find reliable evidence, speak in public). At the end of the 1st semester, all 10th grade students participate in the school debate tournament, proving the skills they have learned. Resolutions are formulated, adapting to the age stage and taking into account current events in the world, preferably with interdisciplinary content. Students' performance is assessed by debate coaches using performance level descriptions for various criteria (subject content, depth of reasoning, diversity of evidence, oratory skills, communication ethics, answers to questions). Individual feedback is provided to each speaker. School debating tournaments use Karl Popper's debating format. Students' critical thinking skills are basically developed during the learning of the debate program.
But other forms are also used, how to implement debates in school curriculum: 1) through special subjects - all students of secondary level acquire the skills of critical thinking by writing research works on different topics,
2) through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary lessons twice a year (Economy and Physics, Chemistry and Geography. History and Social Sciences with focus on Sustainability etc.),
3) through local and international projects (content and methodology – common values, civic engagement, demography etc.),
4) through the debate program (World School Debates and K. Popper Debates),
5) through Erasmus+ project “DE.M.O.S” and other projects.
Debates for students in Latvia are organized in Latvian, English and German. There are various organizations that run debate programs: Latvian Debate Center in Liepāja, Goethe Institute in Riga, debate clubs of various universities.
Debates are used to find out the opinion of young people on various debatable issues. For example, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia, the Chancellery of the State President organizes meetings with young people and discusses or debates current events in Latvia and the world.
The debate center of the Latgale region, which is located in the Daugavpils State Gymnasium, conducts master classes and debate tournaments for elementary school students in Latvian and English.
