Debate goes out of its home
From January 12-17, 2020, Daugavpils State Gymnasium pupils and teachers travelled to Portugal, Famalicio, to study together with Italian, Turkish, Polish, Dutch and Portuguese pupils in the format of the World Schools Debate (WSD). This is the Erasmus + project De.M.O.S (“DEbate as innovative MethOd to enhance critical thinking and life skillS” 2019-1-IT02-KA229-062169). Daugavpils State Gymnasium can also be proud of the fact that the project logo has been created directly at our school (the author of Class 12a schoolgirl E. Vagale).
For four days pupils had a chance to debate one of the topics that are different to each mobility. This time, everyone talked about the impact of technology on personality development, the lack of communication and the use of cellphones in the learning process. The debate was interesting in the fact that pupils worked in multinational teams and pupils had to adapt to each skill of debating, speaking English, working in a team and many other nuances. On the other hand, school teachers participated in the trial process, thereby improving their English and debating skills. But what do the debaters think and say themselves?
Class 10a - Nikita Aleksejevs-Mobility gave me the opportunity to get to know the people from other countries who made me feel more open and get new friends. On the other hand, debate developed the ability to speak more freely in front of the public and to express my thoughts. The project had a great impact and I wished everyone could participate in this kind of project.
Class 11a - Laura Vucena –Project time improved my communication skills, especially while working in a team. The beautiful and unique cities – Porto, Braga, Gimaruas – gave unforgettable feelings and impressions. This journey will remain a memory of the new friendship, knowledge and great experience in many areas.
Class 11a - Artur Ozerskis –The debate developed the logical thinking. Each claim is based on facts of great importance. The WSD lets you freely express your thoughts, but it must be worded firmly without oversimplification. The creative and reasoned work could be combined with the familiarity of Portuguese culture, looking at its most beautiful places and knowing local life and people.
Class 11b - Lauma Sitnika –A very interesting experience was to get to know a different mentality, which on the one hand seemed different, but on the other, enabled intercultural relations and networking to be learned. Once again, I am convinced that a great deal of benefits in these projects are the acquired acquaintances from different countries, who teach both the establishment of dialogue and the possibility of forging relationships more tallyby learning and improving English and communication skills.
Class 12a-Elza Vagale-The project in Portugal provided the first experience on the WSD format, which allows you to look at various problems from the different views, to learn to express qualitative and based points of views. Everything was combined with the enjoyable new culture; new friends were acquired and Portuguese landscape and historical monuments were examined.
Class 12b - Anna Luīze Ruskule - The project allowed to develop communication skills and skills to debate in WSD format, as well as mobile work in groups with project participants from other countries was on a great importance. It was also pleasure to see the beautiful natural views and cities, to know the local population and culture.
The project certainly allowed pupils to develop as personalities, to develop skills that will continue to be useful. Pupils like to change up!
